Belarus and Lithuania will sign agreement on shipping development in the Niemen /11.08.2008

According to the Belarusian Government Transport authorities of Belarus and Lithuania will sign agreement on the development of inland shipping opportunities

The agreement is targeted at the development of borderland infrastructure in Belarus and Lithuania. The river is not deepenough for heavy cargo transportation. Therefore the project is developed mainly for passenger service.

Check –point that will use simplified checking schemes should be organized on the river. According to the agreement the parties should themselves decide on the parts of the river where satisfactory shipping conditions should be offered. Moreover, the parties are expected to share yearly information about the terms of the opening of new navigation services as well as shipping routes, where transportation is possible. Each country will provide on its territories necessary death of the routes and navigation signs.

The development of the river shipping services should be at least partly financed by the Government. The part however has not been decided upon.
