Eurasian Union declaration to be clinched in December

A declaration to establish the Eurasian Union could be signed in December 2011, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday.

"This means that the idea of creating the Eurasian Economic Union has become more definite," he said at a news conference after a meeting of prime ministers of Customs Union and Eurasian Economic Community. The Eurasian Union could become operational no sooner than in 2015.

The idea to set up the Eurasian Union was put forward by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev in 1994. The members of the union are expected to include Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan at the initial stage. At a later time, other former Soviet republics are expected to join the union.
