Oversized, heavyweight and project cargos

International transportation of heavy and oversized goods is widely in demand nowadays. But only experienced logistics companies can handle transportation of the cargo that is overweight, oversize, or doesn’t fit into standard shipping containers due to its specific character.

With transportation of overly wide, long, tall or heavy cargo, no predefined solution can be applied. Every client requires custom-tailored approach and development of an individual route and project plan considering a vast variety of project-specific factors.

Moving the cargo across international borders makes the challenge yet more complicated, since apart from domestic laws, international rules and regulations have to be observed.

To manage every aspect of the international transportation of heavy and oversized cargo, the following multi-step process is adhered to:

Step 1: Schedule development. At this stage, the transportation schedule is being elaborated indicating the selected mode of transportation, equipment options facilitating the delivery, means of packaging or any other specialized resources that may be required.

Step 2: Route development. At this stage, a detailed cargo delivery route is being elaborated. The route may either be represented by a door-to-door single transportation mode solution, or include other infrastructure facilities for cargo transferring to enable several transportation modes.

Step 3: Documents preparation. The logistics company obtains all the required licenses and permits for the cargo transportation, gets the appropriate approvals and draws up all the required documents. Different types of the shipped goods have their own specifics of the documentation process. Thus, transportation of specific cargo types may necessitate obtaining a permit.

Cargo insurance is an important consideration at this stage.

While regulatory arrangement of domestic shipments may be quite easily assured, with cross-border shipment, specific permits from the transit countries may be required. Besides the cargo, the transportation route may as well be subject to negotiation.

STA Logistic Partners with a number of insurance companies to offer all-round cross-border cargo insurance coverage.

Step 4. Cargo loading and shipment, as defined by the selected transportation mode and the contents of the project plan.

Pretty often, the international cargo delivery is carried out using several transportation modes. Thus, to move equipment between continents, combination of several transport types is required. The cargo may be shipped by rail (in a wagon, container or a railroad platform) from the plant to the nearest sea port to be subsequently handled on board a vessel. So, the logistics company has to alter between several transportation options and consider a vast variety of factors to deliver the heavy or oversized cargo as safely, fast and cost-effectively as possible.

Among the most frequently carried oversized cargoes are:

• Industrial machinery: machine units and other equipment used in the manufacturing process.

• Agricultural equipment: farm machinery, combine harvesters, tractors and other machinery.

• Road-building and civil engineering equipment, mostly, road rollers and asphalt laying machines, power shovels and motor cranes.

• Boiler equipment, power plant equipment, etc., including power plant building facilities, generators and other energy infrastructure compounds.

• Mining industry equipment.

• Assembled manufacturing lines.

Types of transport

To handle oversized and heavy cargoes, several types of transport may be used. 3-, 4- and 5-axle trucks and semitrailers are used to carry the cargo over relatively small distances. With long distances, railroad transportation with containers, covered wagons and open-top wagons and platforms is used.
