Sea Freight

To date, sea freight container shipping is the safest cargo transportation option. Usage of containers for cargo transportation ensures convenience and safety when moving the cargo over long distances. Containers are carried using any transportation mode and are easily transshipped, which makes them indispensable for multimodal transportation.

Based on the transportation route, 3 basic container delivery modes may be combined:

  • sea container transport;
  • road container transport;
  • rail container transport.
Sea freight containers have predefined loading internal capacity defined by specific container dimensions. Provided the cargo fits within the standard loading gauge, one of the tree modular container dimension options is used:
  • 20᾽Standard (length – 5,895 м; width – 2,350 м; height – 2,392 м);
  • 40᾽Standard (length – 12,029 м; width – 2,350 м; height – 2,392 м);
  • 40᾽High-cube (length – 12,024 м; width – 2,350 м; height – 2,697 м).
If the shipped freight is overly long, wide or high, which prevents it from fitting into standard containers, specialized sea freight transportation equipment is used: opentop, flatrack, platform, palletwide, etc.
With overly high or long freight, an open top option (20' Open Top Container, 40' Open Top Container) with vertical loading is used.
Flat rack containers (20' Flat Rack Container, 40' Flat Rack Container) and platforms can accommodate the cargo with overly sized height and width.  Herewith, container carrying capacity is to be considered. Maximum tonnage at different sea shipping lines may vary, but generally it doesn’t exceed 50 tons.
If the cargo exceeds all standard dimensions (height, width and length), an open platform container is used.

Usage of containers for sea freight shipping provides for:

  • low shipping costs;
  • ability to switch to rail and road transportation modes leaving containers unopened (and the cargo intact);
  • high level of security;
  • high level of cargo safety and limited exposure to damage owing to container seals;
  • door-to-door delivery enablement;
  • support for optimized international deliveries over long distances, including hard-to-reach destinations.
Despite a wide array of advantages, usage of containers for sea freight shipping is not free from risks. At this point, an experienced logistics company gets into play to estimate the probability of hazardous situations and propose solutions – like enhanced packaging or mounting – to eliminate cargo damage or loss.
Still, the safest solution for those who want to stay away from losses is cargo insurance. With a properly drawn up insurance policy, even given the most unfortunate turn of events, you’ll receive compensation for the full value of your goods.
